Najib Razak appeals 1MDB conviction, sentenced to 15 years
Najib Razak, the former prime minister of Malaysia, has been in jail since 2022 for taking money from a fund called 1MDB.
He was just found guilty of more charges and was given an extra 15 years in prison.
He doesn't agree with the decision and has asked the court to change it.
Some people in his political party are upset about the decision, but the current prime minister asked everyone to stay calm.
Najib also wants to serve his time at home instead of in jail, but the court said no.
Najib Razak, 72, was sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison and a $3 billion fine for abuse of power and money laundering related to the 1MDB scandal.
He has filed an appeal against both the verdict and the sentence, as well as a separate appeal to serve his current term under house arrest.
Najib was found guilty of four charges of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering for illegally receiving about 2.3 billion ringgit from 1MDB.
The current prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, urged calm and acceptance of the court's decisions, despite tensions within the ruling alliance.
Najib has been in jail since 2022 on graft offences linked to the 1MDB scandal, which involved about $4.5 billion stolen from the state fund.
