PAC flags Rs 62.10 crore loss on defective ammunition
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has reported a loss of Rs 62.10 crore because an ordnance factory supplied defective ammunition to the Indian Army.
The ammunition had a lower melting point than required, causing it to leak explosives.
The PAC has recommended that the government should improve quality testing and accountability to prevent such incidents in the future.
They also suggested studying global best practices for testing methodologies.
Additionally, the PAC has recommended clearing pending defense offsets obligations and conducting a special audit to better understand the implementation of the Defense Offsets Policy.
PAC reported a Rs 62.10 crore loss due to defective 155 mm ammunition supplied by Ordnance Factory, Badmal.
Defective ammunition had a lower melting point of TNT mix explosives, causing leaks within shelf life.
OFB had to replace 14,159 ammunition, resulting in the financial loss.
PAC recommended strengthening quality tests, accountability mechanisms, and studying global best practices.
PAC also urged the government to clear pending defense offsets obligations and conduct a special audit.
