India’s Battery Storage Additions Surge 83-Fold in H1 2026

India built a lot more battery storage in the first half of 2026 than it did a year earlier.

It added 8.2 gigawatt-hours, compared with 98.4 megawatt-hours in the same period last year.

By the end of June, the country had 9.3 gigawatt-hours of operational battery storage.

More than 88% of that total had been commissioned during the first six months of 2026.

Companies and agencies also offered 28 gigawatts of storage projects for development.

Most operating systems were standalone batteries rather than batteries connected to renewable energy projects.

Rajasthan had the largest share of installed storage among Indian states.

The report does not identify one specific reason for the rapid increase.
