Azerbaijani Opposition Leader Detained Over Coup Allegations
Ali Karimli, a leader of a political party in Azerbaijan, was arrested and put in jail before his trial.
The government says he was planning to overthrow the president, but he and his party say these are false accusations.
The government also says he was getting money from another man who is already under house arrest for similar reasons.
The party denies any connection between Karimli and this man.
The court decided to keep Karimli in jail until February.
Ali Karimli, leader of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party, was arrested and placed in pre-trial detention until February 13.
He is accused of plotting to overthrow President Ilham Aliyev, which he and his party deny as politically motivated.
The investigation is linked to Ramiz Mehdiyev, former head of the presidential administration, who is under house arrest for attempting to illegally seize power.
A government source claims Karimli was financed by Mehdiyev, a claim denied by the APFP's deputy chairman.
The court's decision follows a raid on Karimli's house and the arrest of two other APFP members.
