IIT Bombay Death Renews Scrutiny of Student Suicide Crisis

IIT Bombay Death Renews Scrutiny of Student Suicide Crisis

Many students at India’s top engineering institutes have died by suicide or other unnatural causes.

A group of IIT alumni counted at least 171 such deaths since 2006.

Most of the deaths in its count were suicides.

A recent death at IIT Bombay brought attention back to the problem.

The student’s mother said the institute treated him very harshly after an examination incident involving ChatGPT.

Students have protested at IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.

Experts say there is not just one reason for these deaths, and problems can include academic pressure, discrimination, money worries and harassment.

The IITs and the government have created counselling and support programmes.

The Supreme Court has ordered institutions to improve reporting and support, but many people say more needs to be done.
