BMC Proposes Sewage Tax, Water Charge Hike for Mumbai Homes

BMC Proposes Sewage Tax, Water Charge Hike for Mumbai Homes

Mumbai’s civic body wants to add a new sewage charge to some small homes.

These homes are smaller than 500 square feet and do not currently pay property tax.

They still use the city’s sewage and water lines.

The charge could start in April 2027 and bring the civic body up to Rs 100 crore each year.

The civic body also wants to increase water charges.

Officials say the extra money would help maintain and expand the water system.

Opposition leaders say the proposals would put a heavier tax burden on residents.

Reports differ on whether the proposed water-tax increase would be 6-7 per cent or 7-8 per cent.
