Malaysian prosecutors end graft case against deputy PM
Malaysian prosecutors have decided to stop their corruption case against the country's Deputy Prime Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
They said they didn't have enough evidence to keep going with the case.
This case was about 47 charges related to criminal breach of trust, corruption, and money laundering.
The decision was made by the Attorney General’s Chambers, which is the group in charge of these kinds of cases.
Some people might be surprised because earlier, in 2023, the court had let Ahmad Zahid off these charges temporarily to allow for more investigations.
The decision has raised questions about how serious the government is about fighting corruption, especially since the Prime Minister's party needs Ahmad Zahid's support to stay in power.
Malaysian prosecutors ended the corruption case against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi due to insufficient evidence.
The case involved 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption, and money laundering related to funds from his charitable foundation.
The decision was made by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) and is final, with no further action to be taken.
The 2023 court decision to temporarily drop the charges allowed for further investigations, which ultimately led to the case being closed.
The move has raised questions about the government's commitment to fighting corruption, as the Prime Minister's party relies on Ahmad Zahid's support.
