MPs Challenge Thames Water’s £10bn Rescue Deal

MPs Challenge Thames Water’s £10bn Rescue Deal

Thames Water provides water services to about 16 million people but owes more than £20bn.

Its creditors have proposed a £10bn plan to help repair the company’s finances.

A group of MPs does not think the plan protects customers, the environment or Thames Water’s future well enough.

They want the government to reject it or take stronger control of the company.

One option is a process called Special Administration, which would keep essential services running while the company is reorganised.

The MPs worry that fines can leave Thames Water with less money to fix pipes and other infrastructure.

Less investment could cause more problems, leading to more fines and higher costs.

The creditor group says it has already helped cover a revenue shortfall and that its plan is the quickest solution.

Thames Water says it needs new money and many years of investment to recover.
