Denmark Apologizes, Offers Reparations for Forced IUDs in Greenland
The Danish government said sorry for putting IUDs (birth control devices) into thousands of Greenlandic women without their permission.
This happened from the 1960s to the 1990s, when Denmark controlled Greenland's healthcare.
The government wanted to lower the birth rate, so doctors inserted IUDs, sometimes without telling the women what they were doing.
Now, the Danish government is giving money to these women to make up for the harm they caused.
This follows a lawsuit from women who were affected by the program.
Denmark's Prime Minister formally apologized for the forced contraception program targeting Greenlandic women.
The program, known as the "Coil Campaign," involved the non-consensual insertion of IUDs.
The program ran from 1966 to 1991, affecting thousands of women and girls.
A 2024 lawsuit was filed by 143 women seeking compensation for human rights violations.
The Danish government will establish a reconciliation fund to provide financial compensation.
