SC Quashes Rajasthan Village Naming Notification
The Supreme Court recently canceled a decision made by the Rajasthan government.
The government had created four new villages in Barmer district, two of which were named after people who donated land.
The court said this was against the rules because villages should not be named after individuals.
The rule is in place to keep peace and fairness in society.
The villages were created in 2020, but the issue was only brought to court in 2025 when people noticed the names.
The court said that even though the villages had been around for a while, the naming was still wrong and had to be fixed.
The Supreme Court quashed a 2020 Rajasthan government notification that named two villages after individuals who donated land.
The villages, Amargarh and Sagatsar, were created to ease land records and local governance in Barmer district.
The court held that the naming violated a 2009 government circular barring villages from being named after individuals, religions, castes, or sub-castes.
The Rajasthan High Court initially quashed the notification but later allowed the villages to retain their names, focusing on the timing of the issue.
The Supreme Court disagreed, stating that the policy violation occurred at the time of naming and could not be ignored due to administrative finality.
