Kuki Woman Dies After Gang-Rape During Manipur Violence
A young woman from the Kuki tribe in Manipur was kidnapped and gang-raped by four men from the Meitei community during ethnic clashes in 2023.
She suffered severe injuries and trauma, which led to her death in 2026.
She was taken to a hilly area, assaulted, and left to die.
Despite filing a police complaint, she never fully recovered from the physical and psychological damage.
Her family and community are mourning her loss and the lack of justice she received.
A candlelight vigil was held in her honor, and her community is demanding a separate administration for their safety and survival.
A 20-year-old Kuki-Zo woman, Nengtinlhing Haokip, was gang-raped and kidnapped by four armed Meitei men during ethnic violence in Imphal, Manipur in May 2023.
She suffered severe physical injuries, psychological trauma, and uterine complications, which led to her death on January 10, 2026.
She escaped and filed a police complaint on July 21, 2023, two months after the assault, due to the breakdown of law and order.
The ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities resulted in over 260 deaths and nearly 50,000 internally displaced people.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) organized a candlelight vigil in her honor and demanded a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo community.
