India's Spectrum Plan Skips 6 GHz WiFi

India's Spectrum Plan Skips 6 GHz WiFi

India's government recently released a plan for how to use different radio frequencies, called the National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) 2025.

This plan is important because it decides which frequencies can be used for things like WiFi, mobile phones, and other technologies.

However, the plan did not include a part of the 6 GHz frequency band that could be used for WiFi without a license.

This is disappointing for big tech companies like Meta, Google, and Qualcomm because they want to use this band to make WiFi faster and better.

The government had previously said they would make this part of the band available, but now it's not in the plan.

Telecom companies like Reliance Jio want the entire 6 GHz band for their services, which might have delayed the decision.

Other countries, like the US and Canada, have already opened up this band for WiFi, and tech companies are worried that India is falling behind.

The government has set up a committee to study the issue, but for now, the 6 GHz band for WiFi is still not available in India.
