Myanmar Junta Frees 6,100 Prisoners on Independence Day
On January 4, which is Myanmar's Independence Day, the country's military government decided to free over 6,100 prisoners.
This is something they often do on special days.
The head of the military, Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing, made this decision.
People gathered outside prisons like the one in Yangon to welcome their loved ones home.
Some prisoners got their sentences shortened, but not those who did very serious crimes.
It's not clear if political prisoners, like those who spoke against the military, were included in this release.
There are still many political prisoners in Myanmar, including a former leader named Aung San Suu Kyi, who is serving a long sentence.
The military is also holding elections, but many people think this is just to make their rule look more official.
Myanmar's junta released 6,134 prisoners and reduced sentences for others on Independence Day.
The amnesty does not include those convicted of serious crimes like murder or rape.
It is unclear if political detainees, including Aung San Suu Kyi, were released.
Over 22,000 political detainees are currently held in Myanmar, according to an independent organization.
The military government is proceeding with a month-long election process criticized as a facade for legitimacy.
