Indian National Sentenced for Staged U Visa Fraud
Mitul Patel, a 40‑year‑old man from Worcester, Massachusetts, was found guilty of tricking the U Visa system.
He helped plan fake robberies at stores so that people could say they were victims of crime and get special immigration status.
The plan started in March 2023 and involved at least six staged robberies.
In July 2026, a federal judge gave him one day in jail, a $1,000 fine, and ordered him to leave the U.S. The U Visa is meant for real victims who help police, so this case shows how the system can be abused.
Earlier, the organizer and a getaway driver were already convicted in 2025.
The U.S. government is trying to stop such fraud to keep the program fair for genuine victims.
Mitul Patel, 40, of Worcester, Massachusetts, sentenced to one day in prison, a $1,000 fine, and deportation for visa fraud.
He pleaded guilty in June 2026 as part of a conspiracy that staged armed robberies at convenience stores and fast‑food restaurants.
The scheme began in March 2023, with at least six staged robberies across Massachusetts and other locations.
Organiser Rambhai Patel and getaway driver Balwinder Singh were previously convicted in May 2025.
The U Visa program, intended for genuine crime victims, was targeted to allow false claims of victimhood.
