Netflix’s East of Eden Recasts Steinbeck’s Notorious Villain
John Steinbeck wrote a famous book called East of Eden in 1952.
One of its main characters, Cathy, does many cruel and harmful things.
Steinbeck describes her as someone who was evil from birth.
A new Netflix series, written by Zoe Kazan and starring Florence Pugh, shows Cathy being hurt and mistreated when she is young.
The series suggests that these experiences help explain why she later hurts other people.
Some viewers think this makes Cathy less frightening and less responsible for her actions.
Others think it makes her a more interesting character.
The disagreement is about whether people are born bad or become bad because of what happens to them.
John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel portrays Cathy Ames as inherently evil and depicts her committing numerous crimes.
Netflix’s seven-episode adaptation, written by Zoe Kazan, gives Cathy a childhood marked by abuse and exploitation.
Florence Pugh plays Cathy, whose traumatic experiences are presented as shaping her decision to manipulate and harm others.
Some critics say the changes soften Cathy into a victim, while others welcome a more complex character.
The article notes that Steinbeck’s novel also leaves room for questions about Cathy’s motives and the origins of her behavior.
