Kerch Strait strikes revive global food crisis fears

Kerch Strait strikes revive global food crisis fears

In March 2022, the price of food around the world went up to its highest level ever.

That happened because Russia started a big war with Ukraine.

Now, more than four years later, the same thing might happen again.

Russia and Ukraine are attacking each other's ships, ports, and places where grain is kept.

Because of these attacks, Ukraine cannot send almost any grain out of its biggest port area, which is called Odesa.

Russia is also having trouble sending grain from its Black Sea ports.

Together, Russia and Ukraine grow and sell a lot of the world's food, including more than a quarter of the world's wheat.

They also sell most of the world's sunflower oil.

If this food cannot reach other countries, food prices could go up everywhere again.

When one kind of oil becomes scarce, the prices of other kinds of oil also go up.

So the world is watching closely because another food crisis may be coming.
