Courts Enhance Compensation for Accident Victims
Two different courts in India have increased the money given to people who were hurt in car accidents.
One court gave a lawyer who was badly hurt in 2002 a lot more money, saying that the original amount didn't consider his pain and suffering.
Another court gave money to a tutor and an advocate who were hurt in a 2016 accident.
The tutor got more than Rs 6 lakh, and the advocate got Rs 3 lakh.
The courts said the drivers were at fault and the insurance companies had to pay.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court increased compensation for a disabled lawyer from Rs 52 lakh to Rs 9.16 crore.
The lawyer suffered 100% functional disability after a 2002 accident where a car hit his scooter from the wrong direction.
The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Thane, awarded compensation to a tutor and an advocate injured in a 2016 accident near Vasind.
The tutor was awarded Rs 6,94,947, including medical expenses and future income loss, while the advocate received Rs 3,12,000.
Both courts found the drivers negligent and directed the vehicle owners and insurers to pay the compensation with interest.
