DA hike explained: How basic pay determines salary increase

Dearness Allowance, or DA, is extra money given to some employees and pensioners when prices rise.

It helps protect their purchasing power.

DA is calculated using a percentage of basic pay, not the entire salary.

For example, a 3-percentage-point increase on a basic pay of ₹40,000 adds ₹1,200 per month.

Someone with a basic pay of ₹30,000 would receive ₹900 more, while someone earning ₹50,000 would receive ₹1,500 more.

This means the same DA percentage increase gives different people different amounts of money.

DA can increase gross salary, but taxes and other deductions may reduce the amount received in a bank account.

DA is usually revised in January and July based on inflation data.
