Pentagon’s New Religious Affairs Office Sparks Church-State Outrage

Pentagon’s New Religious Affairs Office Sparks Church-State Outrage

The Pentagon is creating a new Office of Religious Affairs.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says it will help military chaplains and support the spiritual needs of service members.

The office will oversee religious policies and programs connected to mental health, suicide prevention, and military families.

It will also evaluate what leaders call the spiritual fitness of troops.

Critics worry the office could give Christianity more influence than other religions.

They say this may weaken the separation between government and religion.

The Pentagon has also reduced the list of officially recognised military religious traditions to 31.

The change has raised concerns among secular groups and constitutional advocates about fairness and religious freedom.
