Tamil Nadu Procures Over 6,000 MT Ragi, Disburses ₹26.48 Crore to Farmers
Imagine the government wanting to help farmers who grow a grain called ragi.
Since 2022, the government in Tamil Nadu has been buying a lot of ragi directly from these farmers.
So far, they've bought over 6,000 tons and paid farmers about 26 crore rupees.
They are buying ragi from farmers in certain districts like Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri.
This year, they plan to buy even more, around 4,000 tons, and are paying farmers a higher price than last year.
This helps the farmers sell their crops and get money for their hard work.
The government is setting up places for farmers to bring their ragi and get paid.
Tamil Nadu has procured 6,453 metric tonnes of ragi from farmers since 2022-23.
A total of ₹26.48 crore has been disbursed to 3,578 farmers.
The state government's 'decentralised procurement scheme' initially covered Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.
Procurement has since expanded to Salem and Erode districts.
The procurement price for the current financial year is set at ₹48,860 per metric tonne, an increase from the previous year.
