Tarique Rahman becomes BNP chairman in Dhaka

Tarique Rahman has become the new leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

This happened after the party's top group, called the Standing Committee, agreed to give him the job.

The decision was made at a meeting in the BNP's office in Dhaka.

Rahman takes over this role after the previous leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, passed away.

The party's general secretary confirmed that everyone in the committee agreed on this decision.

This change is important for the BNP as they prepare for future political activities.

Rahman returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in London.

He is now a leading candidate to become the prime minister in the upcoming elections.

Rahman said that Bangladesh should not return to the political conditions that existed before the toppling of Sheikh Hasina’s regime on August 5, 2024.

He also met with the Indian High Commissioner, Pranay Verma, amid rising tensions between India and Bangladesh.
