Saree Archive Exhibition Explores Light and Colour
A group in Bengaluru opened a new show called "Perched upon a Woven Sky" that has 45 old sarees.
The people who put it together decided to show the sarees not by where they came from, but by how they look in different lights and colours.
They made the room change from dark to bright to show how the sarees change.
The show only lasts 20 days so people can see the special lighting and learn about the fabrics.
The group wants to talk about old sarees and use what they learn to make new, cool clothes with the help of weavers and designers.
The Registry of Sarees in Bengaluru opened its first exhibition, ‘Perched upon a Woven Sky’, featuring 45 textiles from a 2,000‑piece archive.
Curator Aayushi Jain said the show is organized by colour, light, and structure, following the day’s chromatic cycle rather than geography.
The collection includes hand‑woven cotton, silk, and zari from Andhra Pradesh, Bengal, Banaras, Pakistan, and Kanchipuram, with lighting designed to alter perception.
The exhibition runs for 20 days, using museum‑standard lighting and Tyvek protection to preserve delicate fabrics.
The Registry’s mission is research and dialogue, linking archival sarees to contemporary design through its Yali initiative and community collaborations.
