Nepal Flash Floods Kill 270, Spur Rescue and Relief Efforts

Severe flash floods swept through parts of Nepal and nearby border areas.

At least 270 people died, and hundreds or possibly more than 1,000 people were missing, depending on the figures reported.

The floods damaged bridges, roads and communities.

Many Indian nationals and foreign tourists were stranded.

Officials said a glacier-related event, such as an ice avalanche or landslide, may have caused the sudden rise in water.

China disputed Nepal’s account of what started the flooding.

India sent food, medicine and other emergency supplies to Nepal.

Indian and Nepali authorities also created helplines and control rooms to help affected people.

Rescue teams were still searching for missing people and assisting those trapped by the disaster.
