India's Special Intensive Revision Sparks Citizenship Debate

India's Special Intensive Revision Sparks Citizenship Debate

India is doing a big cleanup of its voter list called the Special Intensive Revision.

It has removed about 7.2 crore names, which is a lot of people.

Some people say that if a name is removed, it might mean the person isn’t an Indian citizen, but the Supreme Court says that just being removed from the list doesn’t prove you’re not a citizen.

The Election Commission says it can only delete names, not decide who is a citizen.

Some people who had passports and ID cards still got their names removed, which caused them to fight the decision.

Other countries like the UK, Germany, Australia, and the US do things differently, and they usually don’t link a name being removed from the voter list to a person’s citizenship status.
