UN Warns Forest Restoration Window Is Narrowing Amid Climate Threats

A United Nations report says the world is running out of time to repair damaged forests.

Forests help provide food, support jobs and protect animals and plants.

They also store carbon and help regulate rainfall.

Since 1990, more than 489 million hectares of forest have been cleared.

Fires, insects, diseases, extreme weather and human activities are putting more forests at risk.

Countries have promised to restore more than 1 billion hectares of land, but only about one-fifth is currently being restored.

The report says restoration can help people, food supplies and economies.

Restoring 1 billion hectares could provide about $1.8 trillion in benefits each year.

The Food and Agriculture Organization is urging governments to make forest restoration a national priority.
