500-Year-Old Polish Crypt Yields Unique Tar-Sealed Coffins
Archaeologists in Poland found a secret room, called a crypt, hidden under an old church.
It took them over a month to dig a tunnel to get inside!
Inside, they found six coffins stacked in three different levels.
What's really strange is that the coffins were covered in a special mix of tar and cloth, like a sealant.
They think this was to keep the coffins safe, especially because burials were sometimes delayed.
One coffin had metal poles around it, which makes them think that person was very important.
This church and the rooms underneath were built about 500 years ago, but the burials happened later.
Now that they've taken the remains to study them, the crypt will be opened for everyone to see.
Archaeologists discovered a sealed 500-year-old crypt under a Polish church after tunneling for over a month.
The crypt contained six burials arranged in three layers of coffins.
An unusual mixture of tar and fabric was found sealing the coffins, a method not previously seen in Poland.
Metal rods separated one layer of coffins, suggesting the burial of a high-status individual.
The crypt, part of a complex built between 1513-1520, will be opened to the public after the 17th-century remains are studied.
- Who
- Archaeologists, Malgorzata Grupa (Nicolaus Copernicus University), Bernardines (former monastery owners)
- What
- Discovered a sealed crypt containing six burials in three layers of coffins, notable for an unusual tar and fabric mixture used as a sealing agent and metal rods separating one coffin layer, possibly indicating a high-status individual.
- When
- Discovery made in 2022; burials occurred in the 17th century; crypt construction was between 1513 and 1520.
- Where
- Under the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Five Martyrs in Kazimierz Biskupi, Poland.
- Why
- To access and study the remains of the Bernardines who owned the monastery, following archaeological efforts that began in 2022.

Significance of Tar and Fabric Mixture
Malgorzata Grupa noted that a layered mixture of fabric and tar on coffins has never been encountered before in crypts in Poland, suggesting a unique sealing method.
Standard Practice for Sealing Coffins
While the specific combination might be unique in Poland, the use of tar for sealing coffins was common, and fabric layers were likely added to aid in preserving the seal during delayed burials.
