Uttarakhand Shuts 20 Unrecognised Madrasas Amid Education Overhaul

Uttarakhand has stopped 20 madrasas from operating because officials said they did not meet recognition rules.

Seventeen of the madrasas were sealed.

The managers of three others said in writing that they had already stopped operating.

The newest actions affected three madrasas in Dehradun and two in Haldwani.

Officials said some managers could not show the documents needed to prove recognition.

The state recently replaced its Madrasa Board with a new authority for minority educational institutions.

That authority is meant to cover schools run by six minority communities.

The government says schools must provide education according to required standards.

The Supreme Court has said states may regulate education standards while protecting minority institutions' constitutional rights.
