Massive Ceuta Migration Surge Triggers Military Deployment
A huge number of people from Morocco tried to cross into the Spanish town of Ceuta, a small island on the African coast.
They swam, climbed fences, and many died.
Spain sent its army to help keep the border safe.
Some European leaders were upset and said they might stop letting people travel freely between Spain and other countries.
The cause of the surge is still debated, with some saying a court decision made it easier for people to stay, and others blaming smugglers who tricked them.
Between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta in 24 hours.
Death toll ranges from 9 to 57, with at least 41 confirmed in some reports.
Spanish Armed Forces and additional police were deployed to restore order.
Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas declared an “absolute humanitarian and social emergency.”
European leaders, notably Italy and the EU Commission, condemned the images and threatened border‑control measures.
