YouTube Fuels Theatrical Boom as Oscars Shift Online

Kane Parsons makes films for audiences that first found him on YouTube.

His movie Backrooms became a major theater success.

Bill Kramer, who leads the Academy, said this shows that online fans can also enjoy cinemas.

Parsons said it is too simple to assume young people only want short videos.

He said many young viewers still like watching films in theaters without distractions.

The Academy has also agreed to show the Oscars for free on YouTube starting in 2029.

This will end ABC’s long-running role as the awards show’s broadcaster.

Kramer said YouTube can reach viewers around the world more directly.

The Oscars are expected to become more interactive and available in more than 30 languages.
