Maharashtra Plans Water Cuts as Mayor Urges Conservation

Maharashtra Plans Water Cuts as Mayor Urges Conservation

Maharashtra has had less rain than needed, and many parts of the state are facing drought.

The government plans to cut water use by at least 10% for local bodies starting October 16.

Industries will have to reuse or recycle at least 30% of the water they use.

The state says drinking water should come before water for irrigation.

Dams will keep an extra 10% of their water as an emergency reserve.

Local bodies have been asked to prevent leaks and use treated wastewater for tasks such as gardening and construction.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said the city currently has about 96% of its required water available.

She still asked residents to save water and support drought-hit parts of Maharashtra.

A central government team is due to assess drought conditions and recommend possible assistance.
