Assam-Arunachal border dispute tensions persist despite 2023 pact

Assam-Arunachal border dispute tensions persist despite 2023 pact

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are two neighboring states in the northeastern part of India.

They disagree about where the border, or boundary line, between them should be.

The argument began long ago, when the British ruled India and drew lines on maps.

Many people in Arunachal Pradesh believe hillside land that belonged to their tribal communities was given to Assam unfairly.

In 2023, the Chief Ministers of both states signed an agreement to try to solve the problem.

Even after signing the agreement, disagreements continue over some villages and pieces of land.

The conflict has occasionally turned into violence, and one person died in a clash in June 2023.

The leaders say they still want peace and prefer to solve their differences by talking instead of fighting.
