India’s Electoral System Offers Lessons for Democracies Worldwide
India runs elections for a very large and diverse population.
A Gulf Today report says this takes extensive planning, trained workers and systems that can reach people in many different places.
It says other countries may learn from India’s experience.
India has also trained election officials from many countries and worked with election bodies abroad.
Keeping voter lists correct is an important part of running elections.
People may move or die, so lists sometimes need to be updated.
The report says updates should still give eligible voters a fair chance to register and vote.
It argues that a voter-list revision is not automatically unconstitutional; how it is carried out matters.
A Gulf Today report describes India’s large-scale elections as a major administrative achievement amid extensive geographic, linguistic, cultural and economic diversity.
The report says India’s electoral experience can inform voter participation, election administration, outreach and institutional adaptability in other democracies.
Since 2011, nearly 3,000 election officials from 141 countries have received training through the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management.
India has cooperation agreements with electoral bodies in 28 countries and three international organisations, and has supplied customised voting machines and indelible ink to some countries.
The report says voter-roll revisions, including Special Intensive Revision, can be legitimate when conducted lawfully, fairly and with safeguards.
