Nifty 500 Reflects India's Economic Transformation Over 26 Years
The Nifty 500 index, which includes 500 of India's largest companies, has changed a lot over the past 26 years.
At the start of the millennium, the index was mostly made up of companies in the commodity and manufacturing sectors.
But now, financial services, consumer goods, and other sectors are more important.
The financial sector has grown a lot, becoming the biggest part of the index.
This change shows how India's economy has grown and become more diverse.
The companies in the Nifty 500 have also become more profitable, with their profits growing much faster than their revenues.
This means that companies are becoming more efficient and making more money.
The biggest companies in the Nifty 50 index used to make up most of the profits, but now smaller companies are also doing well.
This makes the market more balanced and stronger.
Financial sector's representation in Nifty 500 increased from 8% to 20% of index constituents and from 7% to 26% of market capitalisation.
Energy sector's leadership in revenues ended in FY25 after over two decades.
Aggregate net sales of Nifty 500 companies increased 21-fold from FY03 to FY26.
Aggregate PAT (Profit After Tax) grew 31-fold from FY03 to FY26, with PAT margin improving from 6% to 10.9%.
Nifty 50's share of aggregate Nifty 500 profits fell from 87% in FY18 to 51% in FY26, indicating broader earnings growth.
