MP Seeks Rajya Sabha Rule Suspension for Mekedatu Dam Debate
A member of parliament from the DMK party, Tiruchi Siva, asked the Rajya Sabha to pause its normal rules so that the house could talk about a big dam project called the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir.
The dam is on the Cauvery River, which flows through the state of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu worries that the dam will reduce the water that reaches its people.
Tiruchi Siva wants the parliament to talk about these worries and maybe set up a special group to decide what to do.
He wants this discussion to happen on August 3, 2026.
The move shows how important the river and the dam are to the people of both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The Rajya Sabha will decide if it can pause its rules for this debate.
If it does, the lawmakers will talk about how to protect water for everyone.
This is a big step in trying to solve a long‑standing water dispute.
DMK MP Tiruchi Siva moved a Rule 267 notice in Rajya Sabha.
Notice requests suspension of Rules 15, 23, 51 for 3rd August 2026.
Purpose is to discuss the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir on the Cauvery River.
Project is controversial, potentially reducing water flow to Tamil Nadu.
Move aims to consider forming a tribunal to address the dispute.
