DRI Seizes Red Sanders Worth ₹6.26 Crore
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) stopped a group of people from smuggling a special kind of wood called red sanders.
This wood is protected by law and can't be sold or taken out of the country easily.
The DRI found 15 metric tons of this wood in different warehouses in Chennai.
They also caught four people who were involved in this illegal activity.
The wood was worth a lot of money, about ₹6.26 crore.
The DRI found the wood hidden in boxes labeled as household items to trick authorities.
The wood is special and protected because it's listed in important environmental laws.
The DRI did a good job by finding and stopping this illegal activity.
DRI seized 15 MTs of red sanders worth ₹6.26 crore from multiple warehouses in Chennai.
Four individuals were arrested, including a key operative, two associates, and a supplier intermediary.
Red sanders are listed in Appendix II of CITES and Schedule-IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making their export restricted.
The DRI conducted coordinated searches from 9th to 11th December 2025, uncovering the wood hidden under cover cargo labeled as household articles.
A total of 169 logs of Grade A quality red sanders were found, with some ready for transport to Delhi for illicit export.
