US-Iran Strikes Return Focus to Strait of Hormuz

US-Iran Strikes Return Focus to Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran exchanged attacks after more than a month without direct strikes.

The United States said it stopped Iranian launchers that were preparing to place mines in an important waterway called the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran then attacked American fighter jets at bases in Jordan.

The conflict is also hurting both countries’ economies.

US officials want to use stronger sanctions to pressure Iran to negotiate.

However, China buys much of Iran’s oil and could respond if Chinese companies are punished.

Iran’s president has said peace may be in Iran’s interest.

But Iran’s powerful hardline military group opposes making major compromises.
