India Sets Revised Pay Scales, Consults States on Security Bill

India planned to change the pay scales for about 5 million central government workers.

The new salaries were expected to begin in October 1986.

The Finance Ministry created a timetable to put the changes into effect.

The Central Pay Commission had submitted its report on June 30.

Many employees welcomed the report, but some groups said certain jobs and pay scales were treated unfairly.

Home Minister Buta Singh also discussed a proposed security-belt bill with leaders from Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir.

He planned to speak with leaders from Punjab and Rajasthan as well.

These discussions were meant to help the government decide how to proceed with the bill.
