China Tests Arctic Shipping Shortcut Amid Wider Geopolitical Ambitions

China Tests Arctic Shipping Shortcut Amid Wider Geopolitical Ambitions

China is testing a shorter sea route through the Arctic to reach Europe.

The route follows Russia’s northern coastline and crosses part of the Arctic Ocean.

A ship called Dubai Tower is taking about three weeks to travel from China to England.

A similar trip through the Middle East took 36 days last winter.

The ship is carrying electric vehicles, batteries and other clean-energy equipment.

The route can save time and avoid shipping lanes affected by conflict in the Middle East.

However, ships may need icebreaker help and can travel there most easily only during a short summer season.

The route is also expensive because companies may need to pay Russia for access and services.

China’s increased Arctic activity could therefore bring both shipping advantages and broader political gains.
