U.S. Steel to Restart Granite City Furnace
U.S. Steel is going to start making steel again at a plant in Illinois called Granite City Works.
They stopped making steel there a few years ago, but now they think there will be more people wanting steel.
They plan to hire about 400 more workers to run the plant.
The company that owns U.S. Steel now, Nippon Steel, is also spending a lot of money to make other U.S. Steel plants better.
The Trump administration helped make sure the plant stayed open, but U.S. Steel says that wasn't the main reason they decided to restart the furnace.
The plant will also supply steel to another company, ArcelorMittal, as part of a big deal.
U.S. Steel plans to restart a blast furnace at Granite City Works in early 2025.
The company expects to hire about 400 more employees, bringing the workforce to around 1,200.
Nippon Steel, the new owner of U.S. Steel, is investing $11 billion in improvements at existing plants.
U.S. Steel will supply 750,000 tons of steel slabs to ArcelorMittal's Alabama plant under a seven-year contract.
The Trump administration's intervention in 2023 helped keep the plant open, but U.S. Steel says it wasn't the main reason for the restart.
