Trinamool factions clash over Foundation Day venue in Kolkata
The Trinamool Congress party in West Bengal has two groups that disagree about where to hold a student celebration on August 28.
One group, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, wants to pick a new place and has asked the police for permission.
The other group, from Kalighat, wants to keep the old spot on Mayo Road.
They already fought over a different event in July.
The police will decide the final location.
A Kalighat lawyer said people will still support the party’s leader, Mamata Banerjee, even if the venue is changed.
Ritabrata Banerjee camp applied to Kolkata Police for the Foundation Day on Aug 28 at multiple alternative venues.
Kalighat faction wants to hold the event at the traditional Mayo Road venue near the Gandhi statue.
The two factions previously clashed over separate Martyrs’ Day programmes on July 21, showing a widening split.
Ritabrata camp leader said they will abide by police permission and hold the programme wherever allowed.
Kalighat lawyer Baishwanar Chattopadhyay urged supporters to rally behind Mamata Banerjee despite potential venue cancellations.
