Kolkata Janmashtami Committee Shift Sparks Religious Harmony Debate

Kolkata Janmashtami Committee Shift Sparks Religious Harmony Debate

A neighborhood in Kolkata has celebrated Janmashtami for nearly 60 years.

Muslims had helped organize the Hindu festival along with Hindu residents.

This year, BJP leader Rakesh Singh created a committee made up only of Hindus.

He says Hindu religious rituals should be managed by Hindus.

He also says people from other religions can still visit the celebration.

TMC functionary Mohammed Alam disagrees with removing Muslim organizers.

He says everyone had followed the rituals together without changing their religious meaning.

The disagreement has started a larger discussion about whether festivals should be organized by one community or shared by the whole neighborhood.
