Nepal’s Elephants in the Fog Examines Trans Belonging
Elephants in the Fog is a film made by Nepalese filmmaker Abinash Bikram Shah.
It follows a Kinnar community in Nepal.
Nepal has created important legal protections for transgender people.
In 2007, people were allowed to register their gender based on their own feelings.
In 2011, Nepal counted three genders in a national census.
In 2023, a trans woman and a gay man registered a same-sex marriage there.
Even with these rights, the Kinnar community still faces difficulties being accepted in daily life.
The film shows the difference between having legal rights and truly feeling that one belongs.
Abinash Bikram Shah’s debut feature focuses on a Kinnar community in Nepal.
Nepal allowed citizens to register gender by “self feeling” after a 2007 Supreme Court ruling.
