Punjab, Haryana Rice Farmers to Receive Carbon Credits by FY26
Rice farmers in Punjab and Haryana are going to get special rewards called carbon credits for using farming methods that are good for the environment.
These methods include planting rice directly into the soil without plowing much, which saves water and keeps the soil healthy.
A company called Grow Indigo started this program in 2022.
Farmers who join this program can earn one carbon credit per acre each year, which can be worth between $10 and $40.
This money helps farmers earn more and also helps the environment by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.
The program has been checked by a global organization to make sure it is doing a good job.
The goal is to help farmers and make the soil healthier while also fighting climate change.
Rice farmers in Punjab and Haryana will receive carbon credits by the end of FY26 for adopting sustainable farming practices.
The initial phase covers 30,000 acres and aims to generate over 50,000 carbon credits.
Farmers can earn $10 to $40 per carbon credit, with 75% of the revenue going back to them.
The program, initiated by Grow Indigo, engages over 100,000 farmers across one million acres.
The carbon credits are verified under the Verra protocol, a rigorous global standard for greenhouse gas reduction.
