TIFF Balances Blockbuster Buzz, Studio Caution and Strange Musicals

TIFF Balances Blockbuster Buzz, Studio Caution and Strange Musicals

The Toronto International Film Festival is showing many new movies in downtown Toronto.

One returning movie is “Obsession,” which became much more successful than expected after last year’s festival.

Its director, Curry Barker, and star, Inde Navarrette, came back to celebrate.

The movie’s distributor is now hoping it will win awards.

Some large studios are avoiding festivals because reviews can be unpredictable.

However, festivals can also make smaller movies suddenly very popular.

TIFF has started a movie market to help companies buy and sell films.

The festival also features unusual movies, including “Stuffed,” a musical about a taxidermist.

This year’s festival therefore mixes successful returning films, business activity and unusual new premieres.
