Punjab Power Workers Protest Privatization, Slam Government
Workers who are hired on contracts by Punjab's power company (PSPCL) are upset because they think the government wants to sell the company to private owners.
They went on strike and protested at the company's main office.
The workers believe the government is making it easier to privatize the company by changing rules that protect workers.
They're worried that if the company is sold, they could lose their jobs or get treated unfairly.
They're also against a new rule that lets small businesses ignore some labor laws.
Outsourced workers protested against potential privatization of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).
The protest was held at the PSPCL head office in Patiala.
Workers are on strike since July 1 and are opposing privatization efforts.
Union leaders condemned the Punjab government's changes to labor laws, which exempt smaller businesses from the Factories Act.
Protesters are preparing for a nationwide strike against privatization on July 9.
