Congress, NC hold Black Day protests in Jammu, demand statehood
On Wednesday, two political parties in India—the Congress and the National Conference—held protest gatherings in the city of Jammu.
They were remembering a day, seven years ago, when a special rule called Article 370 was removed.
Because of that change, the region of Jammu and Kashmir lost its special status and its statehood.
The parties call this day a 'Black Day'.
They want the government to give the region its statehood back.
They also want laws that protect people's land, jobs and other rights.
The police stopped the protesters from marching to the centre of the city.
There was some pushing between police and the workers.
A Congress leader said they will keep protesting until statehood returns.
The Congress and National Conference (NC) held separate protest rallies in Jammu on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, observing it as a 'Black Day'.
Protesters demanded the immediate restoration of statehood and constitutional safeguards for land, jobs and other rights.
Police prevented the protest marches from moving towards the city centre, leading to brief jostling with workers at different locations.
The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) organised a demonstration near Shaheedi Chowk, where leaders raised slogans against the Centre.
A Congress leader said the party will continue its agitation until Jammu and Kashmir regains its statehood.
