Asia Enhances Screening for Nipah Virus
Asia is taking steps to protect its people from the Nipah virus, which has been found in West Bengal, India.
They will check the temperatures of people arriving from affected areas and ask doctors to report any suspected cases.
The governments are also giving out health advice to travelers and keeping a close eye on workers coming from South Asia.
They are working with other countries to better understand and track the virus.
The health ministers said it's important to be alert because outbreaks can happen anywhere, but the main concern is if the virus starts spreading easily from person to person.
The virus can cause a deadly brain-swelling fever in humans and can also spread directly from person to person through close contact.
Several vaccines are in development but remain in testing.
Two confirmed cases of Nipah Virus disease have been reported in West Bengal, India, both health workers under treatment.
Authorities across Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, and China have implemented airport temperature checks and other screening measures.
Singapore's Communicable Diseases Agency will set up temperature screening at its airport for flights arriving from affected areas in India.
The Ministry of Manpower in Singapore is stepping up surveillance over newly arrived migrant workers from South Asia.
Thailand has assigned designated parking bays for aircraft arriving from areas with Nipah infections, and passengers must complete health declarations before clearing immigration.
