High Court Notices Punjab Over Unpaid Power Dues
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the Punjab Government and the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to respond to a complaint.
The complaint says that government departments in Punjab have not paid their electricity bills, which amounts to over Rs 2,600 crore.
Instead of paying these bills, the government is planning to sell land owned by PSPCL to get money.
The land sale is worth about Rs 2,700 crore, which is almost the same as the unpaid bills.
The court wants to know why the government is selling land instead of paying the bills.
The government says the land sale plans are old and were decided years ago.
The court will now decide what to do next.
Punjab government departments owe Rs 2,600 crore in unpaid electricity dues to PSPCL.
PSPCL is planning to sell land worth Rs 2,700 crore to manage financial stress.
The land sale is estimated to generate Rs 2,789 crore, which may be used for election-related freebies.
The High Court questioned the petitioner about the reliance on media reports and the lack of RTI documents.
PSPCL and the state government argued that the land transactions are not new and were approved earlier.
