Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos, Steel

The United States and Canada tried to make a new trade deal, but the talks failed.

President Donald Trump said the United States plans to put a 50% tax on Canadian cars, trucks, car parts and steel starting in 2027.

He said companies could avoid the tax by making their products in the United States.

Trump accused Canada of treating American farmers and other businesses unfairly.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States made last-minute demands that Canada could not accept.

Canada plans to answer with matching taxes on some American goods.

These actions could make trade more expensive and affect factories that use parts from both countries.

Some auto industry executives questioned whether the proposed U.S. tariffs will actually happen.

The two countries must also deal with future negotiations over their North American trade agreement.
