Reserve Bank of India's Unified Lending Interface to Streamline Loan Decisions
Imagine getting a loan is like trying to find a specific toy in a giant toy store.
Normally, you have to run around to many different places to get all the papers that prove you are you and that you can pay back the toy money.
The Reserve Bank of India has created a new special computer system called the ULI.
It's like a smart assistant for the people who give out loans.
This assistant can quickly gather all the important information about you, like your ID and your job details, from many different places online, all with your permission.
This means the loan giver can decide much faster if they can give you the loan, sometimes in just a few minutes instead of weeks.
It also helps people who might not have a perfect credit score get a chance at getting a loan.
While you can't use the ULI yourself, it makes it much easier and faster for banks to give you loans.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has developed a Unified Lending Interface (ULI) to expedite loan application and decision-making processes.
The ULI acts as a data marketplace for lenders, accessing financial and non-financial borrower data electronically with borrower consent.
Currently in its pilot phase, the ULI has facilitated 1.4 million loans valued at ₹65,000 crore as of April 2025.
It aims to reduce loan processing costs by up to 60% for lenders and compress processing times from weeks to minutes.
The ULI's broad scope includes identity verification, eligibility assessment, land records, GST data, property searches, and more, potentially expanding credit access for various borrower segments.
